Bayley Hazen Red Barns Loop

Ticklenaked Pond-Ryegate Corner-Mosquitoville. 16.5
miles. From P&H Truckstop, I-91, Exit 17, add 4.6 miles.
Moderate to advanced difficulty. Hybrid bike. Ride
counterclockwise. No services along this route.

Numbered cues below refer to MAP. Click here. (PDF)

Note: Unless you enjoy long uphill hikes, forget
following the B-H Rd. up from the marker in Wells River.
Revolutionary War history buffs feeling a need to do so
should drive up it instead or bike down it into Wells
River from Ticklenaked Pond. Parking is available at the
pond boat-launch area.

Accomplished riders can lengthen this outing by
beginning at P&H Truckstop, I-91, Exit 17, (homemade bread
and humungous pies). Follow US Rt. 302 and Boltonville Rd.
The 1.5 mile climb to Ticklenaked Pond offers a down-sun
warm-up for in-shape riders.

This loop can also be enjoyed as the Great Red Barn tour
of working, preserved, endangered, collapsed, and lost
examples. And save this one for clear weather as it also
might be called the Great White Mountain View tour.

1. Ticklenaked Pond. In Abenaki means “place of the
beaver.”

2. Bayley-Hazen Military Rd. 6.5 mile section north to
Mosquitoville follows Colonel Bayley’s original 1776 layout
almost to the foot. He planned to lead a force over his new
road to reinforce Benedict Arnold's siege of Quebec City.

3. Views to Lafayette Range in the NH White Mountains

4. Surviving barn on one side of the street, cut stone
foundation of a lost companion across the way. Go left on
Mosquitoville Rd.

5. Glimpse of Mt. Washington uphill from the barn. Go
left on Hall Rd.

6. Hall Farm, 1794 pioneer homestead. Granite from Blue
Mt. quarries nearby was a frequent choice for Civil War
monuments, including several at Gettysburg.

7. Four Corners. Straight or right leads down to US
Rt. 302.
