Hanover, NH-East Thetford, VT

Ledyard Bridge-East Thetford and return, 20 miles, paved,
easy. Any bike.

Numbered cues below refer to MAP. Click here. (PDF)

1. Ledyard Canoe Club. Parking, canoe and kayak rentals,
swimming adjacent. Use Tuck Drive, a walking hill, to the
Dartmouth campus. Or easier West St. to town center.

2. Extra-wide shoulders along NH Rt. 10, the Dartmouth College
Highway. Road drops off Hanover Plain glacial feature at motel.

3. 66 River Rd., Luther Wood Tavern site, 1832. A huge stone
Greek Revival pile that featured a colossal-order portico.
Became a local haunted house until being pulled down in 1958.
Column bases still on property.

4. Chilly swimming on the hottest days at the little falls in
Hewes Brook. Note: No space for auto parking along narrow,
hemmed-in Shoestrap Rd.

5. Sections of little-used state-owned RR line have been
suggested as a rail-with-trail possibility north of here.

6. Covered bridge upstream from present Rt. 5 span washed
out in great ’27 flood. Old Bridge. Rd. leads to hidden boat
launch and section of old road preserved in situ.

7. Exposure of Ammonoosuc Fault, which the river generally
follows north of Mass. border. Older rock above has been
thrust several thousand feet to the east over younger rock.
Breccia, crushed material in between, tells the tale.
