Bethel-Randolph

North Royalton-East Bethel-Randolph Center Loop. 21
miles, very difficult climbs. Paved and dirt. Hybrid or
road bike.

Numbered cues below refer to MAP. Click here. (PDF)

Miraculously bypassed by both the railroad and the
interstate, the valley of the Second Branch of the White
River delights, with fifteen miles of pre-1840 fossils at
every bend in the road. There are no easy routes from
the valley to Randolph Center, seven hundred feet above.
The preferred choice, dirt Silloway Rd., requires a full
half-mile of hiking at the bottom and two other significant
walking hills farther on. But it presents superior
architecture, views, and shade. Other routes are merely
stunning.

1. I-89, Exit 3. Park. Before the ride, feast on pancakes
at the Sugar House.

2. Splendid octagon schoolhouse retains original child-
proof Smith patent woodstove.

3.Alternate route to Randolph Center via dirt Crocker Rd.

4. Spectacular brick tavern, c. 1815; a relic of the
stagecoach era, in need of immediate preservation.

5. VT Rt. 66 paved alternative to Randolph Ctr. For road
bikers. Unremittingly steep, little shaded, suitable for Tour
de France training.

6. Ridge Rd., paved/dirt. One mile to panoramic
southerly views of Killington. Unique Floating ridge,
5 miles ahead over hill and dale at Brookfield.

7. East Bethel Rd. bears right at Y. Use caution at
asphalt/dirt transition.

8. Stopped-in-time hamlet once home to stonecutters
who quarried granite from ledges high on Quarry Hill
above. Beers 1869 Atlas shows hotel, three dry goods
stores, a tin shop, tub factory, and a “BS Shop.”
